MEDEA/BRITNEY

By James Clements

Photography by Pablo Calderón-Santiago

MEDEA/BRITNEY is a one-woman multimedia piece juxtaposing the Greek character of Medea with the modern tragedy and public consumption of contemporary pop icon Britney Spears.

This one-person show re-locates Medea's story to Spears' bathroom in 2008 when, at the height of her highly-publicized difficulties, she locked herself in the bathroom with her two children. The project features original text, as well as excerpts from "Medea" by Euripides, translated by Robin Robertson, "MEDEAPLAY" by Heiner Muller and Vanessa Grigoriadis' longform profile, "The Tragedy of Britney Spears," published in Rolling Stone in February 2008.
